"Working with nature"

AVONDALE ESTATE, PAARL, SOUTH AFRICA

This family owned estate is rapidly creating an enviable reputation with their commitment to Bio-Logic/Natural farming.  Respecting the land and returning it to the condition you would have expected to find in years gone by, long before the intervention of fertilizers and pesticides.

Through utilizing simple methods, such as a posse of ducks to eat the snails or releasing certain types of wasp to eat the mealy bugs, Avondale are able to work with nature to protect the vines.  Choosing not to use chemicals and fertilizers on the land but to restore the grounds nitrogen levels by growing cover crops, preserving the soils natural balance for years to come.

This meticulous viticulture produces the fruit that the winemaker uses to create a range of stunning wines.  The winery received a high level of investment in 1996 when it was taken over by the Grieve family.  This has allowed them to produce top quality wines whilst maintaining their natural philosophy.
