MARTINBOROUGH, WAIRARAPA, NEW ZEALAND

In
1978 a report was published which analysed areas in New Zealand best
suited for producing high quality wines from classical grape varieties.
Martinborough was identified as the closest New Zealand climatic
analog to Burgundy. Hence
the establishment of the vineyard in 1980.
Derek Milne chose the original site and searched New Zealand for the first valuable cuttings. The first commercial vintage occurred in 1984 resulting in steps being taken by the directors to recruit a full time winemaker, Larry McKenna. It was then apparent that
the Martinborough appellation was capable of producing not just good
wine but great wine. Martinborough vineyard is ISO14001 certified, which means there is a clear and audited environmental policy based on the principles of minimum impact on the land and air that provides the bounty. The grapes are hand picked to ensure the best fruit makes it to the bottle. Much of the winemaking process is based on burgundian techniques, which have produced some of the worlds most complex and delicate red wines for centuries. |
